Emergency Access

What Is Emergency Access?

Emergency Access lets you designate trusted contacts — people who can request access to your vault in an emergency. This is useful if something happens to you and a family member or colleague needs to access your accounts.

Key principle: No one can access your vault without your knowledge. Every request has a waiting period during which you can reject it.

What You See

The Emergency Access screen is accessible from the Tools tab. It has two tabs:

"Granted by Me" Tab

Shows people you have added as trusted contacts. Each contact card displays:

  • A status indicator (Pending, Request Active, Approved, Rejected, or Revoked)
  • The contact's email address
  • The waiting period (how many days before access is automatically granted)
  • If a request is active: the requested date and countdown to automatic access
  • A menu icon (⋮) with context-dependent options

"Granted to Me" Tab

Shows people who have added you as their trusted contact. Each card displays:

  • The granter's email address
  • The waiting period and countdown
  • A "Request Access" or "Use Access" button depending on the status

A floating "Add Contact" button appears at the bottom right.

How to Add a Trusted Contact

  1. Tap the "Add Contact" button
  2. Enter the contact's email address (they must also have a DavianVault account)
  3. Set the waiting period using the slider (1 to 30 days)
  4. Tap "Add"

Waiting Period Options

PeriodSuggested Use
1 dayVery trusted family member
3 daysClose family
7 daysTrusted friend or colleague
14 daysProfessional contact
30 daysMaximum caution

Choose a longer waiting period for people you trust less — it gives you more time to reject an unwanted request.

What Happens When Someone Requests Access

  1. Your trusted contact opens their DavianVault app ("Granted to Me" tab) and taps "Request Access"
  2. They confirm the request (the waiting period is disclosed)
  3. You receive a notification that someone has requested access
  4. The waiting period countdown begins
  5. During the waiting period, you can:
    • Approve — immediately grants access
    • Reject — denies the request
  6. If you do nothing and the waiting period expires, access is automatically granted

Managing Contacts (from "Granted by Me" tab)

Tap the menu icon (⋮) on a contact card for options:

OptionWhen AvailableWhat It Does
Approve NowWhen a request is activeImmediately grants access
RejectWhen a request is activeDenies the request
Revoke AccessWhen access has been grantedTakes away their access
Delete RecordAny timePermanently removes the contact

Using Emergency Access (from "Granted to Me" tab)

If someone has added you as a trusted contact:

  1. On the "Granted to Me" tab, find their entry
  2. Tap "Request Access" — confirm the request (you'll see the waiting period)
  3. Wait for the waiting period to expire (or for the granter to approve your request early)
  4. When access is available, an "Access is now available" banner appears
  5. Tap "Use Access" — a dialog explains what will happen:
    • You'll receive read-only access to their vault
    • Your access is logged in their audit log
    • The vault owner is notified
  6. Confirm to proceed

What Emergency Contacts Can See

When access is granted, the trusted contact receives read-only access. They can:

  • View passwords
  • View secure notes
  • View credit cards
  • View documents

They cannot:

  • Edit or delete any items
  • Change the master password
  • Add or remove other contacts
  • Access settings

Important Safety Notes

  • You are always notified when someone requests emergency access
  • You can reject any request during the waiting period
  • You can revoke access at any time, even after it's been granted
  • Emergency access contacts must have their own DavianVault account
  • All emergency access actions are recorded in the audit log
